The traditional style consists of:
Shape: Rectangle shaped house with a wing added at a right angle forming an L shaped house.
Porch: Often with a shed-roof porch placed within the L made by the addition of the wing.
Some are stepped in shape, in that the roof-ridge of the gable-front portion is higher than the adjacent wing, and others the entire roof-ridge is uniform height.
The Northern style is usually a gable-front two-story house with the addition of a side open-gabled wing added at a right angle, forming the L shape.
